Best Sims for Casual Play - What Works When You're Not Racing Daily

Most sim racing content assumes you're grinding daily. But what if you race once or twice per week?

Different sims suit different time commitments. Here's what actually works for weekend warriors.

The "Pick Up and Play" Tier

Gran Turismo 7 (PlayStation)

Why it works: Turn on console, race in 2 minutes. No setup fuss, no PC maintenance.

Perfect for: Console owners, casual sessions, variety of cars Time needed: 20 minutes for quick race

I keep PS5 in living room. When I have 30 minutes spare, GT7 is my go-to.

Forza Motorsport (Xbox/PC)

Why it works: Similar to GT7. Great graphics, accessible physics, quick races.

Perfect for: Xbox owners, career mode fans Time needed: 20-40 minutes

Both are "sim-lite" but excellent for limited time. The Logitech G923 works natively with both.

The "Casual Competitive" Tier

iRacing

Why it works: Races run every hour on schedule. Show up, race, done. Matchmaking means you race your skill level.

Perfect for: Structured competition, limited but consistent schedule Time needed: 45-60 mins per race session

Downside: Expensive (subscription + content). But the convenience is unmatched.

I race iRacing Saturday mornings. Official races at 10am, 11am, 12pm. I pick one, race, done.

Automobilista 2

Why it works: Great AI for offline racing. Quick race mode. Runs well on modest PCs.

Perfect for: Offline racers, variety seekers, budget-conscious Time needed: 30-45 mins

Best value for single-player racing. £30 one-time purchase.

The "Deep Dive" Tier

Assetto Corsa Competizione

Why it works: GT3 focused, incredible physics, deep but approachable.

Not ideal for: True casual play (setup matters, practice needed) Better for: Weekend warriors wanting serious racing Time needed: 60-90 mins to be competitive

I spent 6 months in ACC. Loved it but needed consistent practice to stay sharp.

rFactor 2

Why it works: Best physics, huge modding scene.

Not for casuals: Complex UI, requires setup knowledge, needs regular practice.

Honestly? Skip this unless you have 5+ hours weekly.

The "Family Fun" Tier

F1 Series (F1 24, F1 23)

Why it works: Assists help beginners, career mode is engaging, officially licensed.

Perfect for: F1 fans, story-driven racing, families Time needed: 20-60 mins depending on race length

Wreckfest

Why it works: Destruction derby racing. Low stress, high fun.

Perfect for: Letting off steam, non-serious racing Time needed: 15-30 mins

When I'm tired and don't want "serious" racing, Wreckfest is pure joy.

My Recommendation for Weekend Warriors

Start with Gran Turismo 7 or Forza Motorsport. Learn basics, have fun, no pressure.

Move to iRacing when ready for competition. The scheduling system is perfect for limited-time racers.

Keep ACC or Automobilista 2 for offline practice. These work when you have random 30-minute windows.

Setup Simplicity Matters

Easy on PC:

  • Forza Motorsport
  • Automobilista 2
  • F1 series

Easy on Console:

  • Gran Turismo 7
  • Forza Motorsport
  • F1 series

Requires PC fiddling:

  • rFactor 2
  • Original Assetto Corsa (modding)
  • BeamNG

Limited time means pick low-maintenance sims.

Single-Player vs Multiplayer

If you have unpredictable schedule: Offline racing (GT7, AMS2, ACC)

If you can commit to weekly time slot: Online leagues or iRacing

I do both. iRacing Saturday mornings (fixed schedule). ACC during week if time appears randomly.

Cost Considerations

One-time purchase:

  • GT7: £60
  • Forza: £60 or Game Pass
  • ACC: £30-40
  • AMS2: £30

Subscription:

  • iRacing: £10/month + content (expensive long-term)

For weekend warriors, one-time purchase makes more sense unless you're serious about iRacing.
